After Chennai Super Kings lost against Bangalore Royal Challengers (BRC) by 14 runs, the slot for semi-finals remains wide open. Bangalore Royal Challengers won the toss and decided to bat. Continuing their poor performance with batting, BRC lost quick wickets and was restricted to a brilliant bowling attack from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for 126. Having to score 127 in 20 overs seemed the easiest run chase ever! But as the old saying goes in Cricket “Its never over until final ball is bowled”. Anil Kumble, Steyn and Praveen kumar of BRC boweld good line and length to get crucial wickets and upset the well set, going-to-be semi-finalist Chennai Super Kings.

During post-match session, When Ajay Jadeja asked Krish Srikanth and the other guy whom I do not know who!, about their thoughts about the match, and the other guy put it perfectly. He said “It is just ordinary match!, I mean both teams didn’t bat very well and pitch was not bad, and they could have batted well”. Krish added “It was a senseless and poor batting performance by CSK”. I agree to both their opinions. I think BRC didn’t do anything extraordinary in bowling area and CSK became “too cocky” for their own good and lost the easiest match in the IPL league.

They way Dhoni, Badri, Patel, Fleming and Raina batted was poor! Having secured 60 runs for the first wicket partnership, one would expect them to carry on and put another 60 runs and win the match easily. Patel didn’t had to play that shot against Kumble’s ball. All he needed to do was rotate the strike and get some singles. After being dropped just in the last over, one would have expected Patel to play sensibly. Even then, after losing Patel, Dhoni came on to bat. One would recall a similar match against BRC where Dhoni came into bat and steadied the innings and won the match for CSK. But then Dhoni gave away his wicket cheaply for 4. But nothing was lost for CSK. All they need around 7 runs per over and had Raina and Fleming still batting. When Akhil clean bowled Fleming, only to be found that due to the fact that there were only three players inside the ring, the ball was declared no-ball and was given a reprieve. Again, one would have expected Fleming to stay on and won the match for CSK. But boy! did they prove us wrong!…

It was complete chaos and pathetic as one batsman after another kept losing no throwing their wickets away. Falling from 60-0 in 10 overs to 118-10 in 20 overs was absolutely pathetic. It was not BRC’s brilliant bowling, all they did was bowled goog line and length. However, with the batsmen throwing away the wickets quite easily, it was easier for bowlers to scalp the wickets. I felt really stupid for watching the match. If CSK has any chance for winning a spot in the semi-final, it has to win the remaining two matches – Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Deccan Chargers (DC). The other matches are Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) play against Delhi Daredevils (DD), DC vs Kings XI Punjab (KXP), DD vs Mumbai Indians (MI), DC vs BR, KKR vs KXP, RR vs MI, DC vs CSK, BR vs MI, and KXP vs RR. There is a huge permutation combination lies ahead CSK even if they win the two remaining matches.

Team Matches Won Lost Tied N/R Points Net RR
Rajasthan Royals 11 9 2 0 0 18 +0.950
Kings XI Punjab 11 8 3 0 0 16 +0.436
Chennai Super Kings 12 7 5 0 0 14 -0.209
Mumbai Indians 11 6 5 0 0 12 +0.663
Delhi Daredevils 12 6 6 0 0 12 +0.350
Kolkata Knight Riders 12 5 7 0 0 10 -0.167
Bangalore Royal Challengers 12 3 9 0 0 6 -1.317
Deccan Chargers 11 2 9 0 0 4 -0.463

As per points table, CSK holds the third position with 14 points. It is the only team in the top three which has negative run rate which could be determinant in case of tie for the third or fourth position. With more than 20 matches to go, of which CSK plays only two. Even if hey win convincingly, that would mean that CSK would land with 18 points from 14 matches. But a lot will depend on other teams winning or losing their crucial matches.

All CSK can do now is just look back at this match and learn not to get “cocky” and play each game properly and not to throw their wickets away. Will CSK be truly become “Super Kings” once again? God only knows. For the time being, I am going to look past this pathetic defeat against BRC, and as each team has a bad day I am willing to accept it as thus, and hope to see CSK play better innings.

My bet for Semi-finalists:

RR vs. MI and KXP vs. CSK/DD.

Your opinions on my bet is most welcome!
