What is considered as a ‘Comedy’ ?

I am a great fan of comedy shows, comedy films and dramas. Its suffice to say that I like comedy in any form. But what is true comedy? Is it the one which generates laughter in us spontaneously through intelligent conversation or is it the ones which generates laughter after we see some one fall or trip over something which is almost physical. Most of us would say both qualify as good comedy. I agree, to a certain extent. Even though it generates laughter in us, the purest form of laughter the one after which you realize there is some meaning to that particular joke/comedy is in my opinion the best form of comedy.

Now you might wonder, what on earth am I talking about having the title of my post as ‘Chocolate Krishna : The Review’? Well, I wanted to emphasis on what (in my opinion) was considered as comedy.

I love dramas. I have been fascinated with dramas since my childhood. Ever since my Uncle bought my first drama cassette “Madhu +2” (by Crazy Mohan and his brother Maadhu Balaji), I have been at awe the way the dramas played out. I have listened to them so many times (it was the time of pre-iPod and mp3 players) that my Uncle had to buy another one since the magnetic tape in the cassette worn out. I still remember some of the famous dialogues of that drama. Then I also came across another great drama actor called S.Ve.Shekar. Since then, these two people have become iconic figures for me in my life. Maybe, because of this influence, I have started making short films.

Well, coming back to the story, I loved dramas and I always fancied myself watching one of these dramas live. That wish came true today (thanks mostly to my Mom) in the form of getting tickets to this new drama by Crazy Mohan and Maadhu called Chocolate Krishna.

Spoiler Alert!!

The story is about a middle class guy who is a staunch believer of Lord Krishna. He keeps praying to Lord Krishna complaining as how he has nothing and how he wants to get ahead in Life. Lord Krishna considers his request and decides to pay him a visit in person. When Lord Krishna appears in front of him, he first disbelieves whether He is really Lord Krishna. After some special effects (yeah for the first time in stage dramas!) Lord Krishna establishes Himself as the One and the Only.

Lord Krishna agrees to stay with him for 3 months and ‘promises’ Maadhu that he will not leave until his problems are solved. One by one Maadhu’s problems get resolved within month and a half, and when the time comes for Lord Krishna to go back, Maadhu tells Lord Krishna that he will not allow Him to go back as because as per His promise, he still needs to stay with him for another month and a half.

Lord Krishna plays a small trick on him and gets Himself relieved of His promise to Maadhu. Maadhu also realizes how selfish he has been and apologizes to Lord Krishna Himself. In the end, Lord Krishna advises him that to trust God completely but also to trust himself and to do his duty faithfully and truly and the rest will be cared upon.

The whole drama is about 2 hours. We paid nearly Rs. 600/- for three persons. I think every paise spent on this drama was totally worth it. There are lot of things I can talk about this drama but I will restrain myself here. First of the dialogues. They intricately woven around our day-to-day issues but still made us laugh at the same time making us think “Oh Yeah!, that’s true!“. I could not also help but marvel at their genius way of marketing (here some of you might disagree, but nevertheless) some of the favorite and popular brands in the dialogue (if you watch it you will understand). But it doesn’t make us think its “cheesy” and we enjoy the dialogues with wholesome laughter. There is no political insinuation nor there is any religious. The tone of the whole drama sets apart from these some what unnecessary issues and provides you with complete un-adulterated comedy 100%!

Secondly it is the actors involved. Maadhu and Crazy Mohan are veterans in stage play. They have done so many dramas, written so many stage plays and Crazy Mohan himself, has written so many dialogues for many films (mostly for Kamal though!). His dialogue delivery combined with his presence in the stage is really awe inspiring.

Finally there is the script itself. Taking a very ordinary script of a man who prays to God for his well being and how God helps him and converting that into a masterpiece is a feat that can be achieved only by Crazy Mohan and Maadhu.

Unlike some of the tasteless and almost idiotic dialogues that masquerade as comedy in today’s film, Chocolate Krishna is welcome blessing to all of us who like comedy. The dialogues are really intelligent and funny, they are also thought provoking and very mature and the actors who deliver them with easy. Its worth watching this drama and I encourage all of you who live in Chennai to go and watch this drama during weekends. Its one of the best ways to spend your precious weekends.

I am giving this drama a 10/10 – A MUST WATCH!
